This week Roy poses a very interesting question: What would you do if you had 75 hours to live? Then DJ asks how Roy would like his dream woman presented to him. We bring some very interesting punctuation to the table and debate which of us gave more effort in school and whether or not it paid off. Also Roy apparently has some problem with sperm and discussing it.

Keep on rockin' in the free world.

If you don’t know who Bigelf are, you need to. Right now. Cheat The Gallows made my wacky year end list and will probably make it again, unless Mastodon puts out another album before December. These dudes put on a heavy fucking show for everyone and reminded all the Wold of Warcraft T-shirt wearing Dream Theater fans what progressive meant in 1975. Mike Portnoy probably relayed probably the best description of them in my interview with him: “They’re about 25 years in the past and 5 years in the future.” And they’re really really cool guys.
Below is my 30-something minute chat with Damon, a few pics from the show and by week’s end I’ll have a transcription for those of you who are deaf or who lack the proper equipment/plugins/moral constitution to listen to me act like a fanboy retard for a half hour. Enjoy!

At one point in the podcast I reference and we announce a song contributed to a porno by Mr. Brown Sound. We don’t have any sort of way to do this legally, so here’s a YouTube video of it:

Since we’ve been so insanely inconsistent – we’re gonna bang out (hehe BANG) out two new interviews and another podcast before the end of the week.

Everyday and Strictly Rule
Enjoy!
Who are your favorite musicians? Is the music you listen to similar to the music you write?
It’s hard to pick favorites, and I listen to a lot of different artists, all the time. Skeeter Davis, Slapp Happy, Michael Hurley, Fleetwood Mac, Erasmo Carlos…it’s an endless litany, my favorite music.
I’m not sure I hear obvious similarities, but perhaps there are allusions in the details, in the feeling, between the music I write and artists I admire.
Last year you recorded some covers of older folks artists (Townes Van Zandt, Michael Hurley…etc) How did you begin to admire these artists? What sort of influence have they had on you?
The way I came to know each songs we recorded on “thing of the past” is different. Some I stumbled across myself in record stores, others were passed onto me through friends. Each has made it’s own unique impact on me lyrically, melodically, in sound and feeling, both just listening to them a lot, and by learning them and recording them with my friends.
How is it different playing and composing a song on your own and playing with a full band?
Writing on my own feels private and obscure. Sharing and reworking the songs with others often lends clarity and insight, providing an opportunity for new perspectives, and adding greater emotional resonance to the songs.

What made you choose the title “Tight Knit” for your latest album?
I chose the title because I thought it fit the album and the artwork, and the pocket my band had been playing in up to and during the recording of the album.
There are lots of names that people have used to describe your music and the music of other artists you’ve work with (Psych Folk, Freak Folk, Naturalismo just to name a few). Do you like the idea that you are part of a certain movement of music or do feel limited by the categorizing?
I don’t care one way or the other. I like that people listen to my music. Categorizing things by nature limits them, tries to define perception, and I don’t find that necessarily useful, though others might.
How did your music relationship with Devendra Banhart begin?
In San Francisco years ago, on a foggy night, at his apartment, sharing songs and wine.
Where do you write your songs? Do you purposely sit down to write or do the ideas build up in your head?
Yes, all of the above. There’s no one way to go about these things. at some point sitting down to write is required and I find being in comfortable, familiar surroundings helps.

Do you have any reoccurring dreams or a particularly interesting dream to share?
I don’t often remember my dreams, so no.
What should a great song do?
It should make you want to listen to it again.
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why?
I’m not sure. I’d have to think about that. Maybe Thailand. Or Patagonia. Some place with a combination of natural beauty and remoteness.
What was the last delicious thing you ate?
Collard greens from Sandra Dee’s in Sacramento.
I love the last song (“At Forest Edge”) on your latest album; what was the inspiration behind those lyrics?
The lyrics are inspired by the melody. I expanded from one line or image to peek inside a mythic vignette about disorientation and desire.
Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever seen one?
I’m not sure if I believe in ghosts or not, probably because I haven’t ever seen one.

<itunes:summary>This week’s podcast marks a definite change in direction. After 50 rambling messes, we (I) decided to take the reigns and practice some preproduction for realsies. Of course the day between recording and posting, Michael Jackson died. Hopefully, everyone will be very very tired of hearing about him, as unbelievable as his death truly is, because there is no coverage here. We do talk about Ed McMahon at length – let’s face it, Michael Jackson and maybe even Farrah Fawcet are really raining on his funeral procession. We also invented a game called “Carcass or Surgery” where I had to guess whether or not James added a term from a sex-change operation to a Carcass lyric.
We also decided to feature some new music this week from bands LAF and Zero System. Don’t let James’ fucking their names up in the intro fool you, we do really like these bands. If you want your music featured on the show, just send some mp3′s in an email to SmartassRadio@gmail.com.
Here’s the show:

Here is the clip of Ed McMahon drunk:

After what felt like three months without a post we’re back with a killer interview. To celebrate completing school my girl and I went on one of the most metal tears ever. My last day of class was 5/6/09 and I capped it with an extreme performance by GWAR at the Chance in Poughkeepsie then after a night of debauchery with Frank we were off to NYC. On Friday, we caugh the No Fear Energy Music Tour with Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying (who definitely deserve a new found respect from me), Children of Bodom (who only played three songs – Alexi “Avian Bone Syndrome” Laiho destroyed his shoulder and couldn’t perform) and God Forbid. On Sunday we were able to see Mastodon perform Crack the Skye at the Williamsburgh Theater in Brooklyn – if you have the opportunity, you have to go.
But Saturday is truly the important night right now. I had the opportunity to sit down with Protest the Hero guitarist Tim Millar and got a great interview. Tim was a great guy and the staff at the Blender Theater was one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Being in the midst of the most metal weekend I’ve ever had, I didn’t have too much time to prepare so please bear with the interview as I stumble through the first few questions. Also worth noting is the fact that Roy coming to the interview wasn’t ever even an option, so I don’t know why I felt it necessary to say he “pussed out.” I’m a horrible friend. Below is the interview and a flash gallery. After the jump is another gallery if you have trouble with this one and a transcription of some of the highlights.

Lorraine took all the pictures, which you can see kick an insane amount of ass.

Live shows:
DJ: What are the crowds like at your shows?
TM: I know the people that like our music kinda come from… take something from it from all different genres so there’s not like a typical “Protest the Hero Fan.” For the most part, our music doesn’t cater to dancing or throwing down because it’s all over the place. So, there really hasn’t been any of that, which I like because I don’t really like seeing people getting punched out and stuff but there’s been like crowd surfing and people pushing each other around. For the most part people are pretty tame – by the time we get on they’re pretty worn out anyway so they just stand around and just look at us with weird looks.
On the next album:
DJ: What do you guys have on tap – are you working on songs on tour?
TM: No, we did a little bit of writing this year, but for the most part we’ve been touring so much. It’s like you get home and you don’t wanna see each other for a couple weeks. By the time we get back to practicing, we’re just like trying out a new set and everything’s tight to go on the road. But actually we’re taking the summer off and we’re gonna start writing again. So, hopefully, I don’t know how it’s gonna turn out but I think with each writing session we kind of have more, you know insight about what didn’t work and what worked and just kinda like take a different approach but try to focus on, you know, tightening the songs, making things full. That’s a big difference I’ve found between Kezia and Fortress. We knew what we fucked up and what was complicated and we tried to over-simplify things a little more, like look at the bigger picture and not just write the songs part to part to part.
His brutal beard:
DJ: Your beard is fucking great.
TM: Yeah I just shaved the moustache.
DJ: Probably a good choice.
TM: My mustache was a bit of a downfall I always thought, but I did eventually get a bit of the curls going, but it still wasn’t that thick… As far as I understand if you start waxing it, it’ll eventually start parting and kinda like learning to grow that way… I met this guy who had a really good handlebar mustache and he spent like, you [...]</itunes:summary>

Hey all, here’s a bitter-sweet podcast (or “Bittersuite” as Motley Crue would have you believe, Nikki Sixx is a god damned poet) – the recording of my last college radio show. Honestly I think it’s one of our best ever. Tommi-Grace Melito sat in with us and we had a really good time. Thanks to everyone for all the love receiecved last night, it really meant a lot to me.

I also decided to include the last ever In-Crowd from the night before. The In-Crowd was my other show with Tommi, and Jesse “NoWonder” Martinez. Again, definitely one of our better shows. For once, I think I can say I was on my game two nights in a row… you be the judge

THIS is the official debut of The In-Crowd on the Internet. It’s my (DJ) second show on The Edge and it’s co-hosted by friends Tommi-Grace Melito and Jesse “NoWonder” Martinez.

We started off talking about a bunch of crazy-ass women (their pictures are below), then we discussed my recent act of douchery, Valentine’s day, Power Rangers, Roy threatened Chris Brown and challenged him to a wrestling match, we ended the show with a brief Oscar/Grammy discussion. There is a lot of stuff going on here. As always check the show out live THURSDAYS 8-11PM EST on WFNP.ORG to participate live!
Here are some lunatic women and what they did this week:

Margaret Cho wrote a song about Miley Cyrus. Because Margaret Cho has never, ever made a joke about Asians and/or their appearance. Unfunny twat.

This crazy bitch set her mother on fire. Shocking.

This meth addict set her own house on fire… and claimed it was because of her support for Barack Obama.

Leanne Rimes on Jupiter whored herself. WHILE SHE WAS TEACHING A 4TH GRADE CLASS.

The transcription is after the jump!

DJ: Hey, everybody I’m DJ and with me as always is…
Roy: Roy, how’s it going everyone? (rhetorical)
DJ: We’re here with a very special guest, we’re in the parking lot at the Crazy Donkey in a Winnebago with Andrew W.K. How are you my friend?
Andrew W.K.: I’m…oh…pardon me I didn’t realize I had my own microphone. It’s a very nice microphone too, it’s heavy. This is Andrew W.K. and I’m very well, thank you.
DJ: Excellent, so my first question that I wanted to ask was: How much for the Winnebago dude?
Andrew W.K.: Well its actually not mine I don’t own it. This is property of the Crazy Donkey venue here….It is, it’s the dressing room. There used to be two, but I’ve always been in this one. I find it very comfortable, they have heaters in here, it’s actually quite warm. Some people at the venue here have thought it is sort of a lesser dressing room to offer their artists, but I think its one of the nicest ones I’ve ever had the privilege being in. It’s extremely comfortable, there is lots and lots of seating, and it’s quite luxurious, it’s warm, it’s very toasty. I don’t own it, but I’ve always thought it would be fun to own a trailer, maybe someday.
DJ: So, you’ve been pretty busy recently. I just caught the pictures on your website, looking very debonair in Esquire.
Andrew W.K.: Oh thank you! Yes, it is quite a magazine. They featured me and I was very honored to be featured in their publication.
DJ: And you just had a book come out in Japan.

Andrew W.K.: Yes, the book is out and it’s my first ever book. I just apologize to anyone who doesn’t read or speak Japanese, including me because I can’t even read the book. I don’t even know exactly what it says, that’s the weirdest thing about it.
DJ: Yeah, they could just be putting your face on it.
Andrew W.K.: That’s a big risk, believe me I’ve thought about and believe me I’ve thought about that possibility quite a bit. But I trust the man who put it together and the magazine who published it I’ve been working with for a long time, so I think they probably wrote what they said they would. It’s an advice column I’ve had for the past 5 years in a Japanese monthly music magazine and we decided to put all of them into a book and there were about 180 different questions and answers. But I would actually like to translate it and release it in the US. So at some point there will be an English language book availaible.
DJ: Cool. How did you get involved with that magazine?
Andrew W.K.: That’s a good question. Well the first time I went to Japan to play I met them and did an interview with them, sort of a standard feature and they asked if I wanted to maybe answer some questions from some of the readers, more as a one-off situation, just to see what it was like. And we did and proved to be very popular. We got lot of response, lots of readers wrote in and we just kept doing it. I don’t think anyone expected it would last for 5 years, but it’s still going. And even though I’m not Japanese and I’m not really that familiar with Japanese culture, we’ve been able to relation just as human beings and that has been [...]</itunes:summary>

Enjoy!

<itunes:summary>Like all good things, updates from Smartass Radio come in waves. Below this post is our first internet-conducted interview done by Roy with Griffin Rodriguez of the Icy Demons. This post, however concerns our first show since the end of Rocktober. It’s actually a very good one. We did a music show during our normal time (Sunday 10PM-Midnight WFNP.ORG) and covered for our good friend Tony G on Monday night from 11-1.
It must have been something about being in a different time slot and the phones being broke, because we did a kickass show. The only glitch lies in the fact that I forgot to start recording it from the beginning, so you miss our sweet intro and the first 5 minutes of the show (which sucked anyway). Anyway, topics include: Badass Animals, Are Me and Roy Gay?, Who has the coolest major? and of course Romantic Roy. Hope you enjoy.

Podcast 23 is an interview I conducted with Ben Wells from Black Stone Cherry. They are a truly excellent hard rock band from Kentucky – this is a short little interview. We cover writing songs, the current tour and the horribly named flea market he was at when I called him. Please excuse the shitty audio on my side in the beginning, I’m trying to figure out the perfect board configuration for these phoners… still.

Once Mr. Walken left, the show took a massive nosedive and you probably won’t even want to listen…

“[Edgar Winter] is a monster.” – Roy

I can’t believe that this and this:

actually happened at the same show.
Then… me and Roy spent too long talking about the finer points of Pokemon, including (but certainly not limited to):
Mew – the rarest pokemon:

(holy hell how did we forget about Pokemon Snap?)
MewTwo – the genetically altered version of the rarest pokemon:

KangasKhan – a cross between a kangaroo and a mongol:

After finally listening to (and loving) Pinkerton, I still hate Weezer with a burning passion. Look at what a bunch of douches they are:

The only band to successfully pull off three self titled albums which then took on the name of the color of each is probably Days of the New and even that is really, really pushing it.

Close but no cigar on Amazon for all three…
After making you suffer through 30 seconds of a Maggot Harvest song, we debut our new movie rating system and put it to work with the new action flick “Wanted”. To be honest, our review is probably better than the entire rest of the podcast…

ugh.
here’s the entirety of “What Not To Listen To: Celine Dion”
What you most definitely should not be listening to in any way shape or form is dumb Celine Dion. This anorexic bitch is a waste of 40lbs of human flesh. Her latest album is called “Taking Chances”. This would be like Stevie Wonder calling his next album “Seeing Things”. The biggest chance this dolt has ever taken was wearing a white pantsuit after Labor Day in September of ’96 just after the release of her single “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”.
I tried to do a little research for this stupid bit, but I found that I couldn’t even get through a full paragraph anywhere on her Wikipedia page. Honestly, could you get through a page of shit like this?
In reference to her album “Let’s Talk About Love”:
As the name suggests, the album had the same theme as Dion’s preceding albums—”love”. However, emphasis was also placed on “brotherly love” with “Where Is the Love” and “Let’s Talk About Love”.
So instead of ranting in a rational and informed manner like on my previous “what not to listen to” which you may recall from October of ’07 I will instead just talk out of my ass for the next few minutes.
Can you believe that it’s been 10 years since VH1’s “Divas Live”? Yeah, me either. Can you also believe that I remember such an idiotic thing? Well either way, I remember Celine Dion trotting out in khaki pants and the worst “I’m a mom who rocks” look on her face while the band started playing AC/DC’s immortal “You Shook Me All Night Long”. She then sang it like the cunty French Canadian she is.
What happened to Anastacia? She was pretty meaty. Back to Celine… God what a fucking phony. That air guitar is inexcusable. That Divas Live was one of the most awful things I think VH1 ever did. Everyone was so fucked into obsessing about “DIVA’S”. Then who do they pick? Of course Aretha “My Shoulders Aren’t Much Different Than A Moose’s” Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain.
I fail to see how the last two fit, but let’s pause and think about how often Aretha Franklin is paraded around like some great artist. It seems like every year she has some star studded performance at the Grammy Awards and ever year she sings even more poorly and gets even fucking fatter. It’s inconceivable.
Mariah Carey I actually kind of like. I don’t care what people say I think she’s hot and she has some set of ti-I mean pipes on her.
Now, Gloria Estefan, formerly of the Miami Sound Machine and until I just checked her Wikipedia I was convince was dead is not in the same category as these other clowns… or is she? Let me check the Wikipedia… nope. She actually struggled at some point in her life and is now worth $500 million.
Shania Twain used to be married to Def Leppard producer Mutt Lange, but isn’t so who cares?
And that is why you shouldn’t ever listen to Celine Dion.
