SmartassRadio 48: Interview: Tim Millar of Protest the Hero

protest_the_hero_DJ_and_Tim.jpg After what felt like three months without a post we’re back with a killer interview. To celebrate completing school my girl and I went on one of the most metal tears ever. My last day of class was 5/6/09 and I capped it with an extreme performance by GWAR at the Chance in Poughkeepsie then after a night of debauchery with Frank we were off to NYC. On Friday, we caugh the No Fear Energy Music Tour with Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying (who definitely deserve a new found respect from me), Children of Bodom (who only played three songs – Alexi “Avian Bone Syndrome” Laiho destroyed his shoulder and couldn’t perform) and God Forbid. On Sunday we were able to see Mastodon perform Crack the Skye at the Williamsburgh Theater in Brooklyn – if you have the opportunity, you have to go.

But Saturday is truly the important night right now. I had the opportunity to sit down with Protest the Hero guitarist Tim Millar and got a great interview. Tim was a great guy and the staff at the Blender Theater was one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Being in the midst of the most metal weekend I’ve ever had, I didn’t have too much time to prepare so please bear with the interview as I stumble through the first few questions. Also worth noting is the fact that Roy coming to the interview wasn’t ever even an option, so I don’t know why I felt it necessary to say he “pussed out.” I’m a horrible friend. Below is the interview and a flash gallery. After the jump is another gallery if you have trouble with this one and a transcription of some of the highlights.

I’m a total ass – I messed up the first eight minutes of this excellent interview by not having my board settings correct. So, here’s what you get (still 20 minutes long…)

SmartassRadio 41: Interview: Peter “JR” Wasilewski of Less Than Jake

We talked to Peter “JR” Wasilewski, saxophonist for the legendary ska group Less Than Jake today. Topics discussed were:  horn maintenance, tour hijinks and the band’s future plans. Mr. Wasilewski is a pretty funny guy with a bit of a potty-mouth. He called us from his Connecticut mansion, where he was wearing no pants. Check out the band’s music here and here.

SmartassRadio 40: Interview: Kevin Kendrick of A Big Yes and a small no

This past weekend DJ and I ventured into the “Big Apple” (via train) to interview vocalist, vibraphonist, songwriter and sometimes guitarist of the band A Big Yes and a small no, Kevin Kendrick. We met at the Cake Shop, which was an OK establishment but honestly I’ve had better, so please excuse the background noise. Kevin is a great guy and despite our abundant technical difficulties gave us a super-duper interview. You can buy his band’s first album “Jesus that looks terrible on you” on iTunes and Amazon, but he would prefer you use iTunes.  Check out his music here.

Kevin (in the front) nearly got raped in Columbia.

Below is the Columbia/rape story, below that is the full interview, enjoy!

SmartassRadio 39: Interview: Andrew W.K.

No one has mastered the art of partying like Andrew W.K. For those who are unaware, he’s just released a compilation of his monthly advice column in Japan, has been featured in the January ’09 Esquire and is basically my new messiah. For those who haven’t had the pleasure, an Andrew W.K. party is truly a religious experience. Click here for tour dates.

What follows is our chat before the show, a photo gallery of winnebago/live shots and a full transcription of the interview (yeah, we’re starting to actually do some work around here). Enjoy!

Interview: Gustaf Spetz

Gustaf Spetz is an up and coming artist from Sweden. He writes some very catchy melodic-pop songs. His debut album, “Good Night Mr. Spetz”, comes out January 28th on Imperial Recordings. The record will be followed with a tour. You might not be able to make it over to Europe to see him live, but definitely check out his music here and here.

SmartassRadio 38: Interview: Michale Graves

Here’s another interview for you… I know, two in two weeks is a lot to stomach. This one is with Michale Graves. You might best know him for his years with the Misfits. Currently, he’s traversing the globe with Marky Ramone‘s Blitzkrieg tour, singing 30 Ramones songs, pushing his new album Illusions Live/Viretta Park, and (as I forgot to mention in the interview) starring in movies – Perkins 14 is to be featured in this coming year’s  Horrorfest‘s 8 Films to Die For. In this interview we cover the West Memphis 3, the current Blitzkrieg tour and what it means to be a conservative punk.
