Interview: Gustaf Spetz

Gustaf Spetz is an up and coming artist from Sweden. He writes some very catchy melodic-pop songs. His debut album, “Good Night Mr. Spetz”, comes out January 28th on Imperial Recordings. The record will be followed with a tour. You might not be able to make it over to Europe to see him live, but definitely check out his music here and here.

When do you first get involved with music? What was your first instrument?
I’ve always had music around me. Mom’s a vocal trainer and she used to sing a lot with me. She also took me to the church’s choir where I sang about God and stuff I then understood, but no longer do .
I started playing the cello when I was four years old, and strangely, I kept on playing til I was nineteen. I never had fun playing it and kept on playing because I wanted to be nice to mum. So first thing I did when I moved out was to quit playing the cello and start playing the piano. And that’s about when I got into pop music instead of classical.

What can we expect from your debut album this January?
Album of the year!

If you could spend the day with one musician, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you two do together?
Santana, I hate him. If I was to meet him he would definately not be able to play another tone on his guitar after that.

Who do you think the worst musician ever was or is?
There are only one thing I dislike more than guitar solos: Santana! How can you pollute music as he do?

Can you tell us a fun story from your trip to Egypt?

I could tell you plenty if you’d like. First thing that happened when we arrived at the airport, was that I got into a fight with those crazy Germans. The thing that happened was that I let a Swedish couple slip into the line. The Germans who stood behind us in line went totally nuts. It was like some kind of mass-psychos. About twenty people started screaming and pushed me back and forward. After a while I got a grip of the biggest guy, so I fasten my eyes at him and told him to make the madmans to stop and so they did. I think I can have kind of scary eyes when I need to.

We spent most of the time at the beach with an Egyptian named Achmed. He had a bag full with bundles of money and he bought us beer and food. He also showed us around in town. One night he drove us to this really shady place. We thought we were going to see belly dance, but this dance performed was kind of more exotic…

There are plenty more of those kind of stories, but I’ll keep them to myself.

When you perform live to you have a backing band, or do you play solo?
Since I went solo, I haven’t yet performed, but when I’ll do, I’ll perform both solo and with band. I like it when it doesn’t sound exactly as on the record. And I like the energy that you get live.

If you were to named king of Sweden, what kind of laws would you instate?
Every musician and cultural worker would be financed by the state. And to not be unfair, everyone else too. Such a happy place earth would be and such a good king I would be.

If you did not have musical talent, what special talent would you want?
Playing soccer. Best thing after music. Zlatan rules by the way.

Do you believe in ghosts?
I’m not thinking so much about ghosts, more about God. It’s hard to believe in times like these, but I hope there is something more than only this.

What’s the best dream you’ve ever had?
This dream of mine that I do live in…
